Good hunting projected if you are in the right place

Quail season opens tomorrow, Oct. 29, in Texas. “It’s been a long time since we’ve had as many quail in some parts of Texas as we have seen this year,” said Robert Perez, upland game bird program leader for Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. The season remains open through Feb. 26, and is expected to attract as many as 100,000 wingshooters.

Areas of Texas holding considerable quail habitat include the Rolling Plains, South Texas and Trans-Pecos. There are more quail in some areas of the state than there have been in a generation.

“It’s got the potential to be a very special kind of year,” said Perez.

A regional breakdown of this year’s TPWD quail index survey, including highlights and prospects, is available online http://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/planning/quail_forecast/forecast/.

The daily bag limit for quail is 15, with 45 in possession. Legal shooting hours for all non-migratory game birds are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. The bag limit is the maximum number that may be killed during the legal shooting hours in one day.
